Lottery Scams
What are the warning signs of a lottery scam?
There’s no way that you can win a lottery that you didn’t play. If you are contacted by someone you don’t know suggesting that you won a lottery, be suspicious. Even emails sent to you that seem to be coming from a genuine email address are most likely fraudulent. No official lottery would contact you about winning a prize because lotteries do not know that you, or any other individual, has purchased a ticket to participate in its draw.

How can I protect myself from a lottery scam?
There are a number of ways you can protect yourself.
- Never click on links in suspicious emails, and do not respond to them.
- Never give out your personal information, bank account details, or any other financial information. No real organization would require this if you won a real lottery prize.
- Do not allow anyone you don’t know to collect or transfer winnings on your behalf.
- Do not pay any ‘processing fee’ in order to claim a lottery prize.
- Do not agree to assist someone you don’t know in collecting their prize.
- Beware of offers from strangers, including on social media, to share their winnings.
- There is no way to guarantee that you will win a lottery prize. Do not agree to any offer suggesting otherwise.

I received a letter saying I won a prize. Is it a scam?
If you receive an email suggesting that you won a lottery prize, be suspicious, even if the email appears to be genuine. No official lottery would contact you in this manner. Do not respond to this email and do not click on any links in the message.
When we call to inform you of lottery winnings, you can login to your account and verify the winning notification yourself.
