How does this Spanish raffle work?
Unlike a lottery, players do not choose their own numbers when they participate in a Loteria Nacional raffle. Instead, they purchase shares, or whole tickets with pre-selected five-digit numbers.
In total, the Loteria Nacional raffle offers 100,000 tickets printed with five-digit codes ranging from 00000-99999. The 100,000 tickets are printed in 10 copies and divided into ten shares to create a total of 10 million shares.
100,000 tickets * 10 copies * 10 shares = 10 million shares.
In the raffle draw, numbers are drawn to determine the winners of the three main prizes as well as winners in the secondary prize divisions. As there are 10 copies of each ticket, there are actually 10 winning tickets of each of the prizes. A player owning a 1/10th share of a winning ticket will receive 1/10th of the prize money won by that ticket.
What is Loteria Nacional's premio especial?
In certain sorteo extraordinario Loteria Nacional raffle draws there is an extra jackpot called the premio especial (special first prize). This prize is awarded to a specific share in a specific series of the first prize winning ticket. This premio especial could be either €5 million, €15 million, or €20 million, depending on the size of the total prize pool.
For example, ticket number 12345 may be the winner of the €1 million first prize (€100,000 per share), but the premio especial will be awarded to one of the ten shares in a selected series of ticket 12345. The selected share will receive an additional €4.9 million in cash prizes for a total win of €5 million.
Odds of winning prizes in the Spanish monthly raffle
The odds of winning a prize in a Loteria Nacional raffle draw are about 1 in 3! That's because each ten-share ticket could match more than 35,000 winning combinations. There are 14-16 prize divisions in each raffle draw, depending on the size of the prize pool. Tickets that partially match the numbers drawn may be entitled to one of these secondary prizes. Purchase an entire Loteria Nacional ticket and you win the entire corresponding prize. Purchase shares in the ticket and you will win prizes according to the number of shares you own.
